Our Meetings and Events Green Story : IET Birmingham Austin Court

16/06/2021

At IET Birmingham: Austin Court, we have come a long way to ensure that our venue and events only have an impact on our delegates, not the planet.  As we know, events often come with a large carbon footprint – with many being held elsewhere, large numbers to cater for and lots of paper!

With a passion for the environment and part of a registered charity, we are fully committed to becoming a sustainable venue and have implemented many new procedures – especially how our delegates get to their event. Being in the heart of Birmingham city centre and a stone's throw away from major transport links, we are encouraging people to think twice about getting in their petrol-powered vehicles and look at alternative ways to reach our venue. Can they use  public transport? Can they car share with any attendee (if COVID rules allow, of course)? Or if they must use their car, do they have an electric car they could drive?

Birmingham has also implemented a Clean Air Zone to improve the air quality of those to visit and live in the city. The Clean Air Zone discourages the most polluting vehicles from entering the zone, and vehicles which do not have clean enough engines will have to pay a daily charge if they travel within the area. With this in mind, we have installed two electric charging points in our small car park for delegates to use for a small fee. While TCW's carbon calculator allows our delegates to evaluate the level of greenhouse gas emissions associated with their travel to and from our venue.
